College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams are computer-based college-level tests that anyone can take to earn credit toward a college degree. More than 2,900 colleges and universities in the U.S. grant credit to students for qualifying CLEP exam scores.

There are 34 multiple-choice CLEP exams in 5 subject areas. Students register for the tests online, then contact a test center to schedule the test. Free online courses and other practice resources are available to help students prepare for the tests.

Here are some reasons for students to take a CLEP exam:

  • They can earn college credit: Each qualifying CLEP score can earn students 3 or more college credits at participating colleges.
  • They can save money: Students who earn credit through CLEP don’t have to pay for the corresponding course at participating colleges.
  • They can earn their degree faster: Students who earn credit through CLEP can meet graduation requirements faster than if they had to take the corresponding college course.
  • They can choose their test date: CLEP exams are offered year-round at test centers throughout the country. Once they register, students have six months to take the exam.
